Just bring home lots of paint chips! Red is a gorgeous color for a large room. Make sure you get the right red, though. Warm reds have a yellow base (think fire engine). Cool reds have a blue base (like deep red lipstick). Neutral reds are just that (like a coke can).
Once you've picked your red, you might need a red primer base to go underneath, especially if the walls are light. If you don't prime, you may end up needing 3 or 4 coats.
You could do just the one wall if that's what you want. But don't be afraid to paint the entire room. You can use painter's tape to make a sharp line on the wall between rooms, or (my fave) you can make a series of lines and make a striped pattern at the division of the rooms.
Don't forget the accessories!! If you do go with just one wall, you're going to want to use lots of red throw pillows and candles and kitchy things to draw the red throught the room. You want your eye to go from here to there and not just be plastered on your RED WALL. You might think about a predominately red painting or other art to hang on the opposite wall, and maybe some red shelving for the third wall and you'll need something for the 4th wall, too, even if it's a clock or candle sconces or whatever. Use the color to make the room flow.I have black furniture and beige/cream colored walls and light brown carpet - will a red wall look ok?
Why not go with the red idea? But you can't just stop with the living room... Go for the whole house... maybe switching up the red and cream.. like red with a cream stripe in the middle
Red is so bold I think one wall will be enough to add some spice to your room. Once you get use to it you can add more if wanted. I think red, brown and black will look ok. And you know what? It is ONLY paint. The cool thing about Paint is You can paint over it if you don't like it. If the red is jumping out at you, I say go for it.
For colour I would suggest a crimson type red, especially if it was a Main wall, that would look cool, It will add a touch of colour, but be carefull because you dont want it to look messy!
For a accent wall try( potery red) By ben. mor.
I paint one or two walls a different color alot in the same room
You'll love it!! Any wall will do but if you can paint the wall behind the blk couches or ent.cent. that would be best. I have a dec arts bus.
faux finishing .....do it !!!
I would try putting red accents around instead. One painted wall is sort of passe'. You could get red pillows, a red throw, vases, etc. However, if you really want to go ahead with the wall paint, I think red goes with your color scheme just fine and you do need an accent color.
Red would probably make the room look like a New Orleans bordello(-;
My husband is a painter and earlier this year he did a job, we all thought it was going to look clownish! Anyway it turned out really very nice! The lady wanted a yellowish, gold color on one wall and a deep rusty, rose red on the other wall, her carpet and all other stuff in the house is all natural colors it turned out great! It will look great in your house as well. If the room is small it will make it look smaller but you said it was large and open so I don't think there'll be a problem there.
Be careful of what color of red you use, red and black can bring on violence. If it is a rosy or rust color of red it will be passonate. If the colors are too dark it will bring on depression. Just pick your red wisely! Good luck and have fun painting!
You might want to look into Feng Shui as well they have some great ideas color codes for each room and color codes for what direction the room is in.

not a true red. try a red that is earth tone.like a rust . it would be perfect. you can go to a home depot and get paint samples of different sades of red and take them home and find out which one looks the best for you. you are the one that will need to be happy with it. go with your gut.
The red wall sounds really cool. Especially with the black couch and entertainment center. And painting one wall is very in...it's called an accent wall. We did this in our house, only we painted it a hunter green. I went to Lowe's and brought home a bunch of paint color samples, and held them up to see which would look best. I bet a deep red or brick would look really cool.
i tried to imagine your wall with a diff color to suggest. i say you got it right! you're right about painting only 1 wall. it's just to put a splash of life! not the bright red, though. something rustic (but not too dull!) so it would go with the black couches and won't contrast too much with the cream walls. think ';monochrome'; when you match the red with the black and cream. you thought of it first, so i don't think your final idea of red will go wrong. you have nice creative color sense. (but whatever, yes, stick to only 1 wall.) best wishes.
come to think of it, i guess your garage is feeling excited and somewhat expectant too, by now, if not jealous..
I think the red accent wall would be very dramatic. Try adding other touches of red throughout your room as well, such as pillows on the couch and glassware on the entertainment center.
